M106, also labeled NGC 4258, is the largest galaxy in this picture. NGC4217 is the second largest galaxy in my picture and is to the right of M106. It appears as an edge-on galaxy with a dark dust lane. M106 is about 22 to 25 million light-years away from our Earth. M106 contains an active nucleus classified as a Type 2 Seyfert, with a central supermassive black hole. Its neighbor, NGC4217 lies farther away at about 60 million light-years from the Earth. If you look carefully at least 10 other galaxies can be seen in this picture.
