M 20 is also cataloged as NGC 6514. It is an H II region in the north-west part of Sagittarius in a star-forming region of the Milky Way's Scutum-Centaurus Arm. M20 is located about 4,100 light years from our Solar System. It is a dense cloud of dust and gas, which is a stellar nursery full of embryonic stars. A stellar jet protrudes from the head of the cloud that is about 0.75 light years long. The Trifid Nebula is a rare combination of three types of nebula that reveal the fury of freshly formed stars and point to more star births in the future.
