M57, or the Ring Nebula, is a planetary nebula, the glowing remains of a previously sun-like star. A tiny white star near the center of M57 is a white dwarf and is the star that produced the nebula by blowing off its outer layers creating a vast luminous envelope of ionized gas. M57 is about 2,000 light-years away in the constellation Lyra and is tilted toward Earth so that astronomers see the ring face-on.
