The Mushroom Nebula is a grouping of 3 nebulas that are about 8000 light-years distant. Although they are about the same distance away they do not appear to be associated. The larger but fainter nebula forming the mushroom cap is SH2-254. The smaller and brighter nebula in the center forming the top of the stem is SH2-257. The nebula forming the bottom of the stem is known as IC 2162 or SH2-255. There are two other nebula in the image. To the right of SH2-257 is the small SH2-256. Towards the bottom of the image is the small and faint reflection nebula SH2-258.
